Rachel Uretsky-Pratt, Washington State elementary school teacher was given a very special Christmas present by one of her pupils this year. The teacher’s work focuses on students whose families have a small income, so as the Christmas time came around, she wasn’t really thinking about any gifts.
But the kids being the kind-hearted angels presented Rachel with little hand-crafted gifts that came straight from the heart. Especially, one gift that touched Rachel, and she shared her story on Facebook through Mary Katherine Backstrom.
“Today was the last day before our winter break. We will have two weeks off to rest with our families and loved ones over the holidays then head back to school next year,” Rachel explained. “With it being the day before break and Christmas right around the corner, most teachers bring their kiddos something such as books or little treats and occasionally in return receive something from their students.”
However, Rachel doesn’t wish to reveal any personal details of her students, she explained on her Facebook post that each child at the school was provided help with his meals- whether at free of cost or a reduced service.
On that morning, when all the children were having their breakfasts, one child had decided that she was going to save the absolutely best part of her breakfast to give it as a gift to her teacher.
“100% of my school is on free/reduced lunch,” Rachel said. “They also get free breakfast at school every day of the school week. This kiddo wanted to get me something so badly, but had nothing to give.”
Everyone knew that the Marshmallows in Lucky Charms were a kid’s favorite part. And this cute little girl decided that she would sacrifice every single marshmallow in her bowl of cereals, just to make sure she had something to present to Rachel.
“Rather than give me nothing, this student opened up her free breakfast cereal this morning, took the packaging of her spork, straw, and napkin, and finally took the time to take every marshmallow out of her cereal to put in a bag—for me,” Rachel said.
The huge amount of time, effort and thought that must have gone into selecting all of the marshmallows, picking them out of the box of cereal is something that most children wouldn’t even think of doing.
This little girl proves to us all that generosity is free, even if you don’t have much in life.
Rachel was immensely touched by her gift, hence she took a picture of it. The colorful marshmallows had been wrapped meticulously in a clear plastic wrapper, and our heart it gushes to see the little girl’s efforts.
“Be grateful for what you have, and what others give you. It all truly comes from the deepest parts of their hearts,” Rachel stated.
We couldn’t agree more with her thought! Even when this little girl had nothing, she put her creativity and kind thoughts, to make sure that she was able to give her teacher a present this Christmas. We could all learn from this big hearted child that thoughts and efforts matter the most!
