That warm cup of coffee that has to be just right and imbibe the correct flavors for the season, or those toasty cinnamon buns that are just too good to avoid. The paycheck is about to come and you wait anxiously to pamper yourself with good treats, but you’re in for a huge disappointment as the amount that you’ve received would buy you just a cup of filter coffee, let alone even last a month for basic necessities also. This is what happened to a mom Aaliyah Cortez, living in Texas. She worked hard for 70 hours as a bartender, and guess what she got as her pay, just $9.28. She couldn’t believe her paycheck, just $2.13 an hour?
“I cannot afford to live off of $2.13 an hour, so I solely rely on the generosity of my customers.” So, the next time you’re enjoying a night out don’t forget to tip your servers kindly, since Aaliyah, me and yourself—we’ve all been there. Let’s see what Aaliyah had to say about the whole scenario.
Aliyah Cortez was very upfront about her current life. She said that it was tough being a working mom for her right then just because she was going through a custody battle. She would love to spend time with her son, but she had to make a living so they can have a good life once the custody battle came to an end.
One this is sure that the monthly check isn’t enough and won’t make her life any better. “Honestly, every time I open a check I just chuckle a little bit. My coworkers and I will compare checks to see who got the least amount and we’ll just laugh because it’s ridiculous how little we get paid.” Aaliyah still tries to stay positive and adds that she loved her job and was fortunate enough to make enough to get by, but it was tough to think that if an emergency came up that could really hurt her financially. She just wished they all had stable and consistent paychecks.
“It’s important to tip because we literally rely solely on those tips. We’ll be greatly appreciative and it’s just nice to be compassionate and understanding that this is just how laws are set up, and if you’re going to restaurants that do abide by these laws, you are feeding into the broken system. We don’t like relying on the customer but until the laws can get changed, we still need to be paid.” Whatever you do, just don’t forget to tip.
Some people are not so easily convinced.
But Aaliyah quickly defended.
She advised all the moms to just keep being badass. Being a mom alone is a full-time job, so she would want them to know she is supporting them. At the end of a day, being a mom was the most precious job of all.
